I, like you, have been a victim of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), otherwise known as acid reflux. You probably know what a huge difference in having a gerd diet can have in the frequency of your symptoms. Below I have provided some foods to avoid and some foods that can lessen the intensity of acid indigestion and other symptoms.
However, do take note that to treat GERD, you will not only want to change your diet but also exercise and even use medication. Make sure you consult your medical professional. You probably will also want to do some other treatment as well. With everything done in conjunction it is when you will feel your best.
Gerd Diet- Foods to Avoid
- Fattening foods- This includes everything fried and things like bacon
- Diary- the casein protein and lactose in milk and yogurt weakens the muscle between the esophagus and stomach. If you must drink milk, drink the non fat version
- Decrease total calories to lose weigh- extra weight promotes reflux by putting to much pressure on the stomach. By shedding the points, you reduce probability of Gerd.
- Avoid spicy foods
- Avoid chocolate- it contains methylxanthine which contributes to Gerd
- Avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages
- Avoid mint
- Avoid citrus juice and tomato products
Some of these items may not apply to you and you may find items on this list that may also worsen the disease for you. It is best for you to see which foods are problematic for you and try to avoid it.
Foods Good for Gerd
- Papaya- it contains the enzyme papine which helps reduce reflux and be used as an alternative to acid reducers.
- Pineapple contains an enzyme similar to papine called bromelain which helps the digestive process.
- Protein- any protein rich food helps reduce heartburn since it increases pressure exerted by the lower esophageal sphincter. You will also want to avoid proteins that are low in fat like chicken or turkey. You can even take protein but avoid the casein kind
- Fiber- Studies have shown that people eating high fiber diets tend to suffer less symptoms.
Other General Gerd Diet Tips
- Avoid large meals, eat small meals throughout the day at regular intervals- large meals fill the stomach and gives it more of a opportunity to reflux back into the stomach.
- Don’t eat late at night- you should stop eating at least 2 hours before bed time since lying down increases the chances of the symptoms
- Lose some weight- studies have shown that Gerd tends to correlate with your weight
- If you wake up from gerd, try sleeping on your left side and have your head raised 6-8 inches.
